Call for Abstracts

The ICARD 2022 Scientific Program Committee invites prospective authors to submit titles and abstracts for papers and posters. Submissions are encouraged across a wide range of topics of relevance to the prevention and management of acid rock drainage and can be made via the Abstract Submission Portal below.

All abstracts must follow the instructions listed below and be submitted online by midnight AEST 24 September 2021. Please note that the closing date for abstract submission will not be extended.

Abstract Submission Details & Guidelines

  • Abstracts should be submitted by the presenting author
  • Only abstracts submitted in English will be reviewed.
  • A maximum of one (1) abstract can be submitted per presenting author. Note there is no limit for abstracts submitted as a co-author; only as PRESENTING author.
  • Notification will be emailed only to the presenting author.
  • Abstracts must not exceed 400 words (excluding the title, authors and affiliations) and should follow the instructions within the abstract submission portal.
  • There is no fee for submitting an abstract.
  • The conference topic area (below) for the abstract must be selected at the time of submission.
  • Abstracts should not contain any tables or figures. References in the text must be cited at the end of the abstract and are included in the 400 word count.
  • The use of abbreviations and acronyms should be kept to a minimum.
  • Abstracts must be submitted by midnight AEST, 24 September 2021 for consideration by the Committee.

Abstract Topics

Priority will be given to abstracts that reflect the Conference theme “Proactive measures and lasting outcomes” and the range of topics listed below. Authors will need to select one of the following topic areas for their abstract submission.

  • Mine planning
  • Characterisation, Classification, Prediction
  • Scaling from laboratory to field
  • Designing, managing and closing of mine waste facilities for lasting outcomes
  • Climate change effects
  • Pit walls and pit lakes
  • Underground mines
  • Remediating legacy sites
  • Active and passive treatment
  • Geomicrobiology
  • Instrumentation, monitoring, data management
  • Modelling
  • Corporate governance and social licence
  • Regulatory policy
  • The economics of ARD management
  • Community perspectives

Writing your abstract

We recommend that your abstract address the key questions below;

  • Why is the content of their paper important?
  • What is novel in their approach? What was done?
  • What are the main findings?
  • What are the main applications and implications for this work?

During the abstract submission process you will be required to provide;

  • Title of abstract
  • Conference theme/topic
  • Full contact details of all authors
  • Abstract text (maximum 400 words)
  • Preferred presentation type

Once you have submitted your abstract, you will receive an automated submission successful email.

Presentation Type

Accepted abstracts will be allocated by the conference committee to either oral or poster presentation formats, noting that at the time of submission, authors can nominate which format they would prefer. Full papers will be required for both presentation formats.

Oral Presentation

The standard length of oral presentations will be 15 minutes for presentation plus five minutes for questions. The presentations will be grouped into topic-based sessions of about 90 minutes in length.

Poster Presentation

Posters will be on display throughout the Conference, unless more than one poster session is scheduled. The author(s) must be present at their poster during a scheduled poster session in the Conference program to discuss the poster with participants.

The size of your poster should not exceed A0 size (841mm x 1189mm) portrait orientation. Materials to fix the posters on the poster boards will be provided.

Terms and Conditions

Whilst every effort will be made to accept an abstract for the presentation type selected in the submission process, the Committee reserves the right to allocate a different presentation type if more appropriate and if program space is limited.

The submission of an abstract indicates an understanding of the following rules for participation in ICARD 2022:

  • All author(s) approve submitting this work for presentation.
  • The author(s) agree(s) to materially confine their presentations to information in the abstract if accepted for presentation.
  • The presenting author will be available to present the abstract if selected for the program. The presenting author will immediately notify the Conference Secretariat if they are unable to present an abstract or if the presenting author changes.
  • Submission of the contact details provided are those of the presenter of the abstract. He/she will be notified about the status of the abstract and is responsible for informing the other authors about the status of the abstract.
  • Submission of the abstract constitutes consent of all authors of the abstract to publication (e.g., ICARD 2022 website, programs, and other promotions).
  • All authors of the abstract warrant and represent that they either are the sole owners of, or have all necessary rights to, sublicense all the information and content in the abstract provided to ICARD and its organizers, and that publication of the abstract does not infringe any rights, including but not limited to, intellectual property rights, or of any third parties.
  • ICARD 2022 reserves the right to remove from any publication any abstract that does not comply with the above.
